Hey Moms,
Any advice on how to get a sleepy baby to nurse for more than 10 minutes? Gabe is proving himself a grazer...he's eating enough to reach his weight goals, which is great, but he's insisting on small meals. Which means he's eating all night long and there's no sleep in Brooklyn.
I'll wake him up and encourage him to keep going, but when he's done, he's done. Any words of wisdom? This too shall pass....

Straight from the nurse in peds at Dartmouth: "torture him." I asked for clarification after she told us that. Turns out she just meant, change his diaper, if he's wrapped up, unwrap him, etc. It worked for Dylan. But I'd also keep in mind that this too shall pass (just in case).
Yeah, I think the only thing we can do is wait for the next phase...Owen wouldn't breast feed at all the first three weeks and I as pumping after every attempted feeding and then giving a bottle....he would scream and arch away from the breast--it was like a wrestling match. Now, he feeds all day and night (ALL night) and won't take a bottle! Crazy crazy babies.
Hey Momma! I agree with Ashley in what worked for us. Wake him up however you can, most easily done by taking his clothes off. Try nursing him in his diaper only and perhaps tickling him? :) There might not be much sleep in Brooklyn for some time anyway! xo
One more thing... Not sure you want to do something like this so early but you could make him wait a bit and actually get more of an appetite so that he'll eat more at one go. My best advice is to trust your instincts.
Hi Hi.. i have a friend that successfully nursed 3 boys... 20min/side every four hours within 3 weeks of birth! She was rigid - and would NOT give in... kids suckled and did their part, she stuck to her guns.. pinching feet, was her favorite means of keeping boys awake...
ME? well, not so successful w/ nursing Dan - 5min one side... every two hours.. kid was tiny til he wasnt.. never hit the chart until he was like 5yrs old!
But dont give um.. that is the most precious thing you can offer your child..and so many long term health benefits too.... cant wait to meet GABE!!!!
