I'm becoming increasingly maudlin about our impending move from Brooklyn. Every time we do, well, just about anything, I'm thinking about how this may be the LAST TIME we do this, and how nothing could ever be as cool as this, and how basically our lives are over. Intellectually, I know this is not true. The other day I was mourning the loss of our little backyard patio when Brian quite rightly pointed out that we are upgrading to a patio three times as large, just as private, and much better appointed for entertaining, and that there really is no reason for me to miss our current backyard. I get this, I really do. But emotions, how you wreak havoc on me.
The above picture is from the LAST TIME we'll have lunch at Bar Toto. It's our neighborhood go-to joint. Just as good for brunch with the kids as it is for a couple glasses of wine at the bar with some girlfriends. (Hi Bess! Hi Sara!) The food isn't mindblowingly amazing, but it's comfortable and classic and they never give me the hairy eye-ball for walking in with a double stroller. It's actually where I took myself for lunch the day I found out I was pregnant with Ellie. And that was the best damned burger and fries I ever ate.
I said to Brian last night that I feel "un-moored," and I think it's an apt description. Losing my routines, without knowing what yet will replace them is a very uncomfortable place for me to be. Whenever we talk about moving to Ellie I make sure to tell her that we're bringing everything in the apartment. And that Gabe, and Daddy, and Sophie the Cat are all coming. And I think it's good for me to remember that, too. The places may change, but the family's the same. And together we'll build new routines, make new friends, and find a new go-to neighborhood restaurant.
